Philipp Geist works internationally as a light and multi-media artist in the mediums of video, performance, photography and painting. The Berlin artist Philipp Geist (1976) showed a 4D mapping installation on the facade of the royal throne in Bangkok on the occasion of king Bhumibol's 82nd birthday in December 2009. The one-hour-show was the central part of the celebrations and was seen by 2-3 million of visitors. In 2008, during the 'Long Night of the Museums', he showed his video installation 'time fades' at the Kulturforum. In this installation Geist interprets the themes of space and time. He avoids using canvasses and projects directly on parts of the façade of the architecture and on transparent grounds like sheets of gauze and fog.In September 2007, he realized the video installation 'Time Lines' on the entire front of the Palazzo delle Espozioni in Rome at its re-opening after it had been closed for five years. The installation was opened by the mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni, and was seen by approx. 20.000 visitors. In 2005, he realized the large project 'Winterzauber' ('Winter Magic') for the Lake Side Restaurant in Zurich and in 2006, he opened the Salon Noir within the context of the exhibition 'Melancholie, Genie und Wahnsinn' ('Melancholy, Genius and Insanity') in the Berlin Neuen National Galerie. Together with the symphony orchestra OBC Barcelona and the Finnish sound ensemble Pan Sonic, Geist opened in 2004 the Sonar Festival in Barcelona. His works were shown at the Dissonanze Festival in Rome, at Clubtransmediale in Berlin and at the Mutek Festival in Montreal which is renowned for new media. He has exhibited his live video performances internationally at the Central House of Artists (CHA) in Moscow, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London, the National Gallery in Warsaw (Zacheta) and at the opening of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.Further projects are characterized by their complexity and the integration of the location, the sound and moving images.

Philipp Geist arbeitet international als Licht- und Multimediakünstler. Im Dezember 2009 bespielte Geist über einen Zeitraum von neun Tagen den königlichen Thron in Bangkok mit einer Video-Mapping-Installation anlässlich des 82. Geburtstags des thailändischen Königs Bhumibol Adulyadej. Die Installation wurde von 2,5 Millionen Besuchern vor Ort gesehen. Im Juni 2010 zeigte er im Rahmen des internationalen Medien-Festivals Mutek die Außen-Installation ,Time Drifts‘ am Place des Arts im Zentrum von Montreal. Im Januar 2008 entwickelte Geist für die Piazzetta am Kulturforum in Berlin die Lichtinstallation 'Time Fades'. Im September 2007 bespielte er das zeitgenössische Kunstmuseum 'Palazzo delle Esposizioni' im Zentrum von Rom mit der Video-Mapping-Installation 'Time Lines'. Im Dezember 2005 realisierte er das Fassaden-Projekt 'Winterzauber' in Zürich. Im Februar 2006 eröffnete er im Kontext der Ausstellung 'Melancholie, Genie und Wahnsinn' den Salon Noir in der Neuen Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Gemeinsam mit dem Sinfonieorchester OBC Barcelona und der finnischen Soundformation Pan Sonic eröffnete Geist 2004 das Sonar Festival im Auditorium Barcelona. Geists Projekte sind in erster Linie gekennzeichnet durch ihre Komplexität in der Integration von Raum, Ton und Bewegbild.

Philipp Geist travaille internationalement en tant qu’artiste lumière et multimédia dans les techniques de la vidéo, de la performance, de la photographie et de la peinture. L‘artiste berlinois Philipp Geist (1976) a projeté une installation 4D sur la façade du palais royal de Bangkok à l’occasion du 82ème anniversaire du roi Bhumibol en décembre 2009. Le spectacle d’une heure fut la partie principale de l’événement et a été vu par environ 3 millions de spectateurs. En 2008, pendant « la longue nuit des musées », il a projeté sa vidéo « Time fades » au Kulturforum. Dans cette installation, Geist traite des thèmes du temps et de l’espace. Il évite d’utiliser des écrans et projette directement sur des parties de la façade de l’architecture ou des fonds transparents tels que des draps de gaze et de brouillard. En septembre 2007, il a réalisé l’installation vidéo « Times lines » sur l’ensemble de la façade du Palazzo delle Espozioni de Rome, lors de sa réouverture après une fermeture de 5 ans. L’installation a été lancée par le maire de Rome, Walter Veltroni, et a été vue par environ 20 000 visiteurs. En 2005, il a réalisé le projet «  Winterzauber » (Hiver magique) pour le « Lake Side Restaurant » à Zurich et en 2006, il a ouvert le salon noir dans le cadre de l’exposition « Melancholie, Genie und Wahnsinn » (Melancolie, Génie et Folie) à la nouvelle galerie nationale de Berlin. Accompagné de l’orchestre symphonique de Barcelone « OBC » et l’ensemble sonore finlandais « Pan sonic », Geist a fait l’ouverture du festival « sonar » en 2004. Ses travaux ont été montrés au festival «Dissonanze » de Rome, au « clubtransmediale » de Berlin, et au festival « Mutek » de Montréal, qui est renommé pour les nouveaux médias. Il a exposé ses performances vidéo live internationalement au « Central House of Artists » de Moscou, l’institut des arts contemporains de Londres, la galerie nationale de Varsovie (Zacheta) et à l’ouverture de « la Pinakotek der moderne » de Munich. Par ailleurs, ses projets sont caractérisés par leur complexité, la prise en compte et l’intégration du lieu de l’installation, le son et les images mobiles.

Philipp Geist (VIDEOGEIST) wurde am 1976 in Witten geboren und ist in Weilheim/Oberbayern aufgewachsen. Seit 1999 lebt und arbeitet er in Berlin und Weilheim.

Philipp Geist arbeitet international als Multimediakünstler, in den Medien Video, Performance, Fotografie und Malerei: Im Januar 2008 anlässlich der 'Langen Nacht der Museen' bespielte Geist die komplette Fläche der Piazzetta am Kulturforum in Berlin mit der Videoinstallation 'Time Fades'. In seiner Installation thematisiert Geist die Themen Zeit und Raum. Dabei verzichtet der Künstler weitgehend auf den Einsatz von Leinwänden und projiziert direkt auf Teile der Fassade des Kulturforums und auf transparenten Projektionsgrund wie Gazestoffe und Nebel. Im Februar 2008 zeigte er im maroden Kurhaus kurz vor dem Abriss des Gebäudes seine Installation 'Broken Time Lines'. Im September 2007 bespielte Geist das bedeutende zeitgenössische Kunstmuseum 'Palazzo delle Esposizioni' im Zentrum von Rom mit einer flächendeckenden Fassaden-Videoinstallation mit dem Titel 'Time Lines'. Anlass waren sowohl die Wiedereröffnung des Museums nach einer fünfjährigen Umbauphase, als auch die 'Notte Bianca'. Die Installation wurde von Roms Bürgermeister Walter Veltroni eröffnet. An zwei Tagen sahen ca. 20.000 Besucher die Installation. Im Dezember 2005 realisiert er das Großprojekt 'Winterzauber' für das Lake Side - Restaurant in Zürich, bei dem er das denkmalgeschützte Gebäude in eine 450qm große, dreidimensionale Videokunst-Installation verwandelte. Im Jahr 2006 eröffnet er den Salon Noir in der Neuen National
Galerie in Berlin, im Kontext der Ausstellung 'Melancholie, Genie und Wahnsinn'. Gemeinsam mit dem Sinfonieorchester OBC Barcelona und der finnischen Soundformation Pan Sonic eröffnete Geist 2004 das Sonar Festival im Auditorium Barcelona. Seine Arbeiten waren auf dem für Neue Medien renommierten Mutek Festival in Montreal, dem Dissonanze Festival in Rom und auf der Clubtransmediale in Berlin, und vielen anderen vertreten. Live-Video-Performances zeigte er international im Central House of Artists (CHA) in Moskau, dem Institut of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London, der Nationalgalerie in Warschau (Zacheta) und bei der Eröffnung der Pinakothek der Moderne in München.

In seiner langfristigen Wasser-Video-Installation 'RIVERINE' zeigt Geist Videoaufnahmen von Fließgewässern verschiedener internationaler Orte. Mit Unterwasser-Videokameras filmt er die Welt unter der Wasseroberfläche. Es ist ein Kontaktversuch zu unserer unmittelbaren, doch fernen Realität, eine künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem allgegenwärtigen Element Wasser. Geist zeigt einen Teil unserer Realität auf, der für uns üblicherweise verborgen bleibt. In diesem Projekt beeinflusst der jeweilige Ausstellungsraum die gewählte Präsentationsform und den Inhalt maßgeblich, realisiert wurde das Projekt bisher hauptsächlich in Galerien, aber auch als vierwöchige 12-Kanal-Installation im club11 in Amsterdam. Stationen des Projekts waren bisher Köln, Berlin, München, Chiemsee, Bremen und Dresden. Ein Höhepunkt war die Ausstellung des Projekts in der 'Three Walls Gallery' in Chicago im April 2007, die gefördert wurde von dem Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (IFA).

Zunehmend wird Philipp Geist auch eingeladen, Kurse und Workshops zu geben, wie in der Sommerakademie in Dresden 2006 oder im Württembergischen Kunstverein in Stuttgart anlässlich des interdisziplinären Festivals CAMP im August 2007. Im Oktober desselben Jahres beurteilt er als Juror des backUp-Festival in Weimar die eingereichten Filmarbeiten.

Er nimmt an verschiedenen Gruppenausstellungen teil, wie z.B. an der Illustrative 2007 in Berlin, im Rahmen derer er seine Multichannel-Videoinstallation 'Paradise Lost' ausstellt. Bei dieser Arbeit interpretiert er die Stiche von Gustave Doré aus dem Jahre 1866 neu.

Auch weitere Projekte, denen Geist seine Aufmerksamkeit und Energie widmet, sind in erster Linie gekennzeichnet durch ihre Komplexität in der Integration von Raum, Ton und Bewegbild. So zeigt er Ende 2006 im Rahmen des DOM-Projekts in der Weilheimer Stadtpfarrkirche Live-Visual-Art zu Musik von Johannes Enders.

Musik und Sound spielen eine große Rolle in den Arbeiten von Philipp Geist. In vielen seiner Werke tritt der Künstler in einen Dialog mit der Musik, welche die Geschwindigkeit, die Intensität von Effekten, die Farbigkeit und auch die Inhalte der Bilder beeinflusst. Dieser Prozess stellt eine audio-visuelle Verschmelzung dar, die dazu führt, dass die Bilder, die Musik und die Veranstaltungsorte durch den synästhetischen Effekt neu erfahrbar gemacht werden. Geist geht live auf die Musik ein,und da es sich in den meisten Fällen um Improvisationen handelt, werden die passenden Bilder spontan und zeitnah auf die Musik abgestimmt.

Bei dem Projekt Hurt Teichmann Geist arbeitet er mit dem Zithersolisten und Komponisten Leopold Hurt und den Elektronik Musikern Hannes und Andreas Teichmann (Gebr.Teichmann) zusammen. Das Noise-Musikprojekt Angel entsteht mit Dirk Dresselhaus (SchneiderTM) und Ilpo Väsäinen (Pan Sonic).

Geist findet seinen Zugang zur Videokunst über die Fotografie und die Malerei. Als 20-Jähriger debütiert er als Maler. Für die Präsentation/Installation seiner Gemälde wählte er einen ungewöhnlichen Ort: einen Fichtenwald im oberbayerischen Polling/Weilheim. Es folgten Audio-Visuelle Projekte mit Martin Gretschmann (Console) im Stadtmuseum Schongau und München.

Im Jahr 2000 erarbeitete der Künstler eine Videokomposition für das Musikstück 'Jolanda' der Weilheimer Avantgarde Jazz Formation Tied & Tickled Trio (u.a. mit den Gebr. Acher 'The Notwist', sowie dem Jazz-Saxophonisten Johannes Enders). Seitdem sind seine Arbeiten weltweit auf Medien-Festivals gefragt u.a. auf der Biennale in Santiago de Chile, den Kurzfilmtagen in Regensburg, im Medienturm in Graz, im ZKM - Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe, im Stuttgarter Filmwinter und in Warschau beim Elektronik Art Festival. In his video-room-installation 'RIVERINE' Geist shows video recordings of rivers from different international locations. With underwater-video-cameras, he records the world under water. It is an attempt to get in touch with our immediate, but distant reality, an artistic discussion with the element water. Geist points out a part of our reality that is usually hidden from us. As in Geist´s other art projects, the form and content of RIVERINE is conditioned by the place where the work is being presented, most of all in art galleries, but also in other places like Club11 in Amsterdam. The project has passed the following stations so far: Köln, Berlin, München, Chiemsee, Bremen and Dresden. A highlight was the exhibition in the Three-Walls-Gallery in Chicago in April 2007, supported by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (IFA).

He has been invited to give courses and workshops, for example in the summer academy in Dresden in 2006 and in the 'Württembergischen Kunstverein' in Stuttgart in the context of the interdisciplinary festival CAMP in August 2007. In the same year he joined the jury of the BackUp-Festival in order to evaluate the submitted films.

He has taken part in various group exhibitions, for example in the Illustrative 2007 in Berlin where he presented his his multi-channel-Installation 'Paradise Lost' based on the engravings by Gustave Doré.

Further projects are characterized by their complexity and the integration of the location, the sound and moving images. In the end of 2006 he contributed visuals to the DOM-project, performing with the saxophonist Johannes Enders in a church in Weilheim.

Music and sound play an important role in Philipp Geist´s works. The music influences the speed of the images, the intensity of its effects, its colours and contents. In the course of this process an audo-visual merging is created, leading to the fact that images, music and the location can be experienced in a new, synaesthic way. Geist selects the images live and as the music is generally improvised, the images are found and modified spontaneously.


Geist worked together with zither soloist/composer Leopold Hurt and electronic musicians Hannes and Andi Teichmann (Gebr. Teichmann) for the project Hurt Teichmann Geist. Moreover, his collaborative work with Dirk Dresselhaus (SchneiderTM) and Ilpo Vasäinen (Pan Sonic) resulted in the 'noise' music project 'Angel'.

It was through photography and painting that Geist gradually made his way to video art. He had his debut as a painter at the age of 18. For the presentation of his artworks he selected an unusual location: a forest in Polling, Upper Bavaria. A number of exhibitions of his pictures and photography followed thereafter in the Stadtmuseum Schonau and Munich (slideshow with Console/Martin Gretschmann),


In the year 2000 Geist created a video composition for the musical piece 'Jolanda' by the Weilheimer Avantgarde jazz ensemble Tied & Tickled Trio (with Markus and Micha Acher ('The Notwist') as well as with jazz saxophonist Johannes Enders and others). From that time onward his works have been sought after at international video and digital art festivals such as the Biennale in Santiago de Chile, 'Kurzfilmtagen' in Regensburg, the media tower in Graz, 'Filmwinter' in Stuttgart and the Electronic Art Festival in Warsaw. Geist's subsequent projects included the production of music video clips for Phonem, Tied & Tickled Trio, Console, Philip Boa, Angel, beigeGT, Ephy and Kpt.michi.gan.
